Woodlands cruise as Home fail to fire
Woodlands Wellington rolled through to the final of the SingTel League Cup with a 2-0 victory over a lacklustre Home United. On paper Home have assembled the most formidable-looking squad in the S.League this season, but the Protectors were second-best for much of the match at Woodlands Stadium.
Home coach Vincent Subramaniam signaled his intent when he named five of Singapore's victorious Asean Cup squad – Lionel Lewis, S Subramani, Shahril Ishak, Shi Jiayi and "The Icon" Indra Sahdan – in his starting line-up. Indra was joined up front by Qiu Li and Kengne Ludovick, forming a forward line that brought together three of the most impressive strikers in the S.League. For their individual threat though, the trio have yet to show much in the way of striking up an understanding in Home's two matches in the Cup so far. Even though playing without suspended influential midfielder Ahmad Latiff, Woodlands looked by far the more fluid team, led by Japanese midfielder Akihiro Nakamura. Former Young Lions keeper Fadhil Salim put on an assured performance in between the sticks for the home side after coming in for regular custodian Yazid Yasin.
The night began brightly for the 1,804 fans in attendance, as both teams traded punches and it was Nakamura who fired the first salvo with a well-struck long-range effort that was not far off the target. Indra though responded for the visitors when he out-sprinted the defence in the 10th minute. Woodlands defender Bah Mamadou however recovered in time and did just enough to unsettle the local hot-shot who shot wide. Traditionally a side that takes its time to settle into matches, the Rams looked vulnerable for a period after that, as Home enjoyed the lion’s share of possession.
In the 18th minute, the Protectors had an excellent chance to take the lead when Ludovick and Juma'at Jantan combined to release Indra, who had started the move himself. The 27-year-old marksman however fail to demonstrate his usual clinical touch when he stabbed the ball over the bar. In their previous match against the Korean Super Reds, Woodlands were remarkably composed in the face of pressure, largely due to the presence of Lucian Dronca shielding the back four from a defensive midfield position. The veteran Romanian was once again operating smartly in midfield, winning just about everything and making his opponents Shahril and Jiayi look like midfield greenhorns.
National team coach Raddy Avramovic, who was in the stands, would not have been impressed with the pair’s contributions on the night. Bearing the burden of Home's attack, Indra continued his one-man assault on the Woodlands goal when on 26 minutes, he smartly shielded the ball from his marker Azlan Alipah but pulled his shot wide.
Not to be outdone, fan favourite and reigning S.League Player of the Year Laakkad Abdelhadi responded in the 33rd minute when he shot wide from a flowing move that involving Park Tae Won and Azlan. Uplifted by their star striker’s efforts, the home side launched their own siege on the visitor’s goal and it paid off six minutes later. Ismadi Mukhtar’s corner was cleared to the edge of the area, and picked up by Home midfielder Shahril. The young Lion ill-advisedly lingered with his clearance though, and his dalliance allowed Nakamura to nick the ball off him and rolling it through invitingly for an unmarked Park. The silky Korean’s touch did not desert him with keeper Lionel at his mercy and slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
The confetti-fanfare celebrations had barely died down when three minutes later, Park’s spectacular volley forced a brilliant save from Lionel, who had to dive at full-stretch to tip the Korean's stinger behind. Home United stormed out after the restart and minutes into the second half, Indra had a gilt-edged chance to level the scores. Having beaten the defence for pace yet again, Indra was clean through with only Fadhil to beat. But the 24-year-old shot-stopper would not be denied a clean sheet however, rushing off his line and foiling the striker once more. Ludovick limped off in the 50th minute, and Ivorian winger Kone Hamed entered the contest. Hamed’s first contribution was to win a free-kick in a good area before he disappointingly skied his shot well over.
Indra's night of frustration continued in the 59th minute when his snapped shot was comfortably held by Fadhil. A goal to the good and never lacking composure or confidence, Woodlands held firm and extended their lead in the 66th minute.
On a quick counter, Park received the ball 30 metres out and smoothly threaded the ball through between Home's Subramani and Diakite Bangaly, to an awaiting Laakkad who timed his run to perfection. Keeper Lionel did get a hand to the Moroccan's flicked effort but the ball trickled past the goal-line to the delight of the Rams Army in the stands.
To Home’s credit they did not give up and continued to attack, but found Dronca in impervious form and defensive stalwarts Mamadou and Jerry Bartholomeusz a real stumbling block. With the two-goal lead, Woodlands played smart football, keeping possession well while keeping the visitors at bay. For all his hard running, his goal and the assist, Park hobbled off in the 85th minute to an appreciative ovation deserving of his Man-of-the-Match performance. The Protectors had a chance to pull a goal back two minutes later but Bangaly’s header struck the upright and the game drew to a close without incidence thereafter.
Rams coach Jorg Steinebrunner heaped praise on the team performance. "We were organised and we looked good going forward. Against opposition like Home United, with the squad they have, we knew what to expect," said the German. "But regardless of who the opponents are, I know that I don’t need to worry about the stars. Against the speed that we were up against, it is impossible for them not to attack us. "I am pleased because despite that, we contained them well and in the end, they did not get enough out of us," he continued. "We proved that as a team, if we remain united, if we play and fight for one another, we can succeed."

Singtel League Cup - HUFC through to Semi

Final Score - TRFC 1 HUFC 4

Woo-hoo!

(from hufc.com.sg)

The match began in a tepid fashion, and it was to carry on for the duration of the whole match, where both teams surrendered possession needlessly. Lack of concentration at the 4th minute caused HUFC its first goal. Tampines Rovers mid-fielder Peres de Oliveira scored the first goal with a header from a quickly taken free kick which left HUFC keeper Lionel Lewis bewildered. A deserved equaliser in the 70th minute made up for the error. Shi Jia Yi's looping corner to the far post found Diakite to slot it in comfortably.

When it was dead locked after regulation time, the match went into penalties. HUFC custodian Lionel Lewis denied Asean's golden boy Noh Alam Shah and Tampines Rovers penalty specialist Sead Muratovic with neat saves and handed HUFC a 4-1 victory.

It was not particularly a good game for Home. However, this is the first real match that the whole squad played together, therefore there should not be much concern in terms of fluidity; things would improve as times goes on. Even before the start of the new season, it can be said that the `feel good’ factor is back. Let’s hope Home get past Woodlands and into the final.

HUFC will now face WWFC in the semi-final clash on Wed, 21 Feb 2007 at 7.45 pm at the Woodlands Stadium. (Read the match preview at hufc.com)

2007 - Middle of the Park

I am all for a fiesty, fast paced midfield that can control a game. That's my personal favourite section of a team. Call me 'traditional', but nothing beats watching a team with a strong midfield plying up and down the pitch, turning every dangers into viable opportunities. Nothing is more pleasing to the eyes than seeing the wingers weave through the opposing teams midfield and defence, tearing them apart and putting the ball nicely for strikers to slot it into the net. It's basic stuff, but not every team can do it well. Hence, the new line-up at the central of "Bishan's park" - very promising stuff :)
Extracted from the hufc.com.
The club has introduced an all-new batch of talents to spice up proceedings in the middle of the park for the 2007 season.
Home United’s first foreigner is certainly most eye-catching, as Ivorian Kone Hamed brings with him pace, physique and panache to the squad, where his heroics for invited Thai team Chonburi FC last year brought them all the way to the Singapore Cup final. Let’s just not place him on the same pedestal as the previous incumbent of the left wing, Sutee Suksomkit, whose dejected reaction in the Asean Football final said volumes. While he has decamped to Tampines, Home fans are eagerly looking forward to seeing Kone in action. He had a goal to his name already; albeit from last Saturday’s friendly against Albirex Niigata. Admittedly the players are still slightly ring-rusty and adjusting to their paces, but his strength on the ball and his skills would do huge favours to the team.
Rosman Sulaiman and Arif (Kamarulariffin Karim), meanwhile, are the two vital cogs in the midfield engine room if needed. Both of them have excelled in recent years playing all over the place, as they slowly found their niche in defence. However, as Rosman proved on numerous occasions last year, his tenacity to stem the tide, ball winning skills, plus a ferocious tackle to ward off opponents, is indeed vital. For Arif, it should not be asking too much adjusting back to his old surroundings, and if he does it well, Home would benefit.
Next up, the two new signings that are about to be mentioned would certainly cause excitement. Shahril Ishak and Shi Jia Yi, two members of the victorious Asean Championship winning squad, make their entrance into Bishan with almost nothing left to prove. Having been the pillars of the previous Young Lions’ squads and the 2004 Tiger Cup success with the national team, the duo would not be too hard pressed to make an impression. Shahril Ishak leaves the Young Lions after four years, and if he is able to reproduce all his skills, on top of all those raking passes and magnificent through balls, Home would be in for a treat. Shi Jia Yi, a naturalized China-born Singaporean, joins his teammate at Bishan, with almost the same expected of him, as an attacking midfielder. While Shahril Ishak can hold his forte in a free role, Jia Yi tends to drift slightly leftwards. In tandem with youth players like Hanafi Zain and Syaqir Sulaiman, they should keep the engine room pumping.
In the final part of the season preview next week, the main men up front – the strikers, would come under scrutiny. Watch this space.

Go Home U

As a guest blogger, it's so heartening to see fans coming in and leave their comments - FINALLY! At least got audience then got motivation to blog mah :)

Lionel is indeed a fantastic player, no doubt about it. But let’s not forget our line-up this year, which is really strong and solid. We have two of the best goalkeepers in this country, coupled with a strong defence led by veteran skipper Subra. Also expect more pace and vigour from our new signing Juma'at.Is this going to be the Home United glory year again – Go Home U!

Hey, how about getting some of the HUFC players come on board to blog too? These chaps are not only good on the pitch, I know for a fact that many are good role models (aka husband, boyfriend, father, son etc) off the pitch too. For a start, it may be opportune to coerce, threaten, force, blackmail, coax, persuade some of the players, starting with Mr Lionel – also known as the man who rocks – to blog here. How about that!

2007 - Look Ahead

s one of the top clubs in Singapore, Home United has set its sight on improving their performance, after a disappointing end to the 2006 season.
Looking back to last year, you need not be a scientist to figure out exactly what went wrong with Home’s season. Things turned pear-shaped as players came in and out of the revolving door at Bishan. Replacements were brought in hastily to fill the never ending woes. Injuries inevitably took the toll, the most notable being the absence of star striker Indra Sahdan. Still the statistics of only 49 goals scored, one of the worst in recent years, spoke volumes. Meanwhile key players and even squad players ‘took turns’, as they had various spells on the sidelines, with the national call-ups not helping Home’s cause. That said, it was a heartening sight to see youngsters step fearlessly into the fold.
Otherwise the annual mid-year malaise that struck Home since 2004 came into the fore once again. Unexpected draws and defeats against the likes of Sengkang and Albirex ultimately put paid to any chances of Home catching the top teams. This should not be the case for if consistency suffers, the title is at stake. Switching coaches early was a clever move to see things through for the new season.
Vincent has embarked the players on a very early pre-season schedule, barely 2 weeks after the end of the final fixture against Sporting Afrique. While the coach was busy finalising his squad for 2007, he has been trying to find the best formula in order for Home to succeed in 2007, with the new pre-season tournament the ideal eye-opener.
In coming weeks, the players, especially the new signings would be introduced, as Home are staring ever closer to March 4, the opening day of yet another new season. Stalwarts bade their long farewells, foreign and local players left for pastures anew, and ten new signings, plus six already retained, should give Home United a brand new competitive look for the new season ahead. All the better if Shahril Ishak and Shia Jiayi can weave their magic and with Indra Sahdan and Qui Li on target at Bishan, everyone would be in for a treat if they do.

So scary...

Everyone is talking about the Thai walkout on the pitch that day. Quite scary leh. *mock faints*

Moi, used to play touch rugby and even though we had lotsa rough and tough, we tried to finish the game and then sort it out.

Read the Straits Times and saw that some Thai media have added a political twist to it. Security has been upped at the match grounds in Thailand.

Hey cool dudes and dudettes, let's go all out to support the Singapore team and do cheer for the Thai team too. Afterall, sports should unify and not divide.

*peace*
